What's In a Name?

 Hello Readers,

I have had several seasons and venues of writing. Many here on Blogger, some scattered throughout my closets and drawers in the forms of handwritten journals, and still others in the form of writing I've done as an educator. Up until recently, I had been feeling stuck and frustrated regarding how to make a creative impact. Thankfully, I found  Paloma's video. Paloma is an actress, singer, and dancer who is grinding her way around Hollywood. The link below should be cued to minute 2, where she shares how she had recently realized she needed to be her own parent. Paloma's Courage says to me, Do the Work (take a break from watching videos and post).

I love the idea of a new start. Enter the Pop Culture Preservation Society (PCPS), women in their 50s who started a podcast. When I heard the hosts recount their perspective on buying school supplies, I was transported back to my middle school self. Talk about a new start, at the 6-minute mark, enjoy some colorful language and humor Back to School Episode 188 PCPS says to me, It's Not Too Late (The creative impact is NOW, it's me showing up to write.).

As I relate this to the service below, I go back to my Dad's willingness to start something new in retirement. He moved to a new town and became an active member of the local church. He followed through on his plan to learn to play the guitar and he was a consistent song leader. A group was formed and was eventually known as Guitars Etc. My understanding is that this group was Guitar players and others, the Etc. Sometimes I saw a stand-up bass, often my brother-in-law is heard on his violin, there might be one of several of the church pianists or organists, one of the flute players, and the list goes on. As I continue to write each post, my plan is to share from each service where my Dad (or others I know) are involved. These services are my starting place, Guitars Etc. will lead me as I post here on: It's Not Too Late, Do The Work.

Traditions

Hello Readers, This week I found myself pondering the question, 'If you could have something from your childhood (such as a toy/album) what would it be?' I instantly knew my answer, but it was not something I could find on E-bay or Amazon. It was my father's Christmas poems. Every year, on Christmas morning, we would get up before the break of dawn, and find many things: loaded stockings, massive amounts of colorfully wrapped presents under our lit tree, and in the tree itself a handwritten note. Our names, Leslie, Helen, and Amy would each be easily found on the outside or top. Inside was Dad's distinctive drafting-learned handwriting. He always used thick colorful construction paper, the type every child of the 1970's remembers. Dad's style of poetry was a mixture of Dr. Seus' rhythm with a sort of third-person Mark Twain storytelling. The daughter was Tom Sawyer and Dad used her current life as content. Testing, Is This Thing On?

Welcome back Readers! I am excited to write and share with you that it is not too late! One thing I have enjoyed this past summer is listening to  Pop Culture Preservation Society  a podcast hosted by three women from Minneapolis. The hosts call their research rabbit holes versus their vulnerability, which they call getting a twisty feeling in their tummy. As I relate their podcast to my Blog, I have been encouraged to go for it and to remember to seek things I enjoy.  My dad also believed this sentiment. After he retired, he decided to take up the guitar and to make it a priority in his daily routine. He also took on the role of leading music. I will share more about this in the future. To close, I leave you with a sample of what seems to be one of the first times Dad used the microphone in this setting  Father's Day 2007 .
