Hello Readers,
How wonderful to enjoy the above service recognizing the joys of Palm Sunday, the musical contributions are exceptional.
As a child, my first memory of Palm Sunday would be when my young children's choir sang as we waved palm branches in the aisles of the church. I didn't understand at the time and yet I remember it vividly and recognize it profoundly. Another memory that I first think of on Palm Sunday is my oldest sister's engagement that took place on that day. The details of the proposal warmed my heart with joy and excitment. It was also funny that my sister actually told my college roommate before she told me because she was having trouble reaching people and she was busting to tell someone. I called back and got the news straight from the source and then my roommate filled me in later about the details.
Eeach year I find Holy Week to be a good time to reflect. Years ago I found some simple illustrations that I like to use as my profile pictures throughout the week: Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Garden of Gethsemane, Peter's Denial, and Mary at the Empty Tomb. I was raised in a church that recognized Maundy Thursday with its own service. We would spend time celebrating a simple meal together alsong with communion followed by washing each others feet. I found this to be a most meaningful experience, one of true humility for both the one washing and the one being washed. After washing feet the two would hug and maybe say 'I love you'. I joined the church through baptism in May of 1982 when I was 13. Experiencing my first communion and feet washing was one of great anticipation. Mom did a good job of explaining to me what to expect and how she liked to quiet her mind and think about Jesus on the cross during communion. Mom also helped me to value the importance of leaving church quietly. Some people would be in charge of cleaning up but if we weren't, then we should keep the feeling of the service in our hearts/minds as we headed home.
A final Holy Week I'd like to share is from 2013. Mom was in the hospital recovering from heart surgery. Due to various complications, what we thought would be a few days turned into weeks. We experienced many lows as a family and cared for her as a team pressing together in ways we didn't know we could. My niece was getting married that year and our deepest prayers was that mom would be able to attend, and she did. During Holy Week I was able to attend the Maundy Thursday service at the church in Kansas. In an intimate way, we also brought the service to mom in the hospital where my sister led us.
With much love -- thanks for reading.
Stay well,
Amy BH
This post evoked soooo many wonderful memories, and had me curious enough to FINALLY try to find the old bulletins so I could check through some details, and that led me down SOOO many bunny trails! BTW, Connie was accompanist for my solo (for which I wasn't credited in the bulletin...Probably because I was preparing the bulletin at that time!!). Funny how there are two things I remember about that: (1) It was a bucket list/goal of mine and I was so happy I could pull it off!! (well, good enough, anyway), and (2) The only comment I remember was from a congregant (who shall remain nameless other than to assure was NOT a member of my family) who only said that "He Shall Feed His Flock" is supposed to be sung by the alto and "Come Unto Him" is supposed to be sung by the soprano. Well, excuuuse me for loving singing both!! Actually, even now I can't get to that part of Messiah without thinking of that comment...
ReplyDeleteAlso, for any readers who - like me - might be scratching their heads about SL being licensed with JL....It was SM who was also licensed that day). This particularly grabbed me because we're coming up on the anniversary of JL's death...And because I knew I preached SL's licensing service, right before the COVID shutdown.
But the memory that had me both horrified and chuckling to myself, was that I told your roommate before I told you about getting engaged!!! I remember so much about that day - including being extremely surprised and giddy - but I didn't remember that!! Thank you for so graciously receiving the news in the spirit with which it was shared <3

Thanks for the clarification and correction on the end of the service-- too many presumptions on my part. I apologize.
DeleteRegarding your solo - it was so brave and wonderfully sung, I heard a hearty Amen (I believe from BS) when you finished. Alto vs. Soprano? -- Handel is not one bit worried about that I'm sure, lol.
